At ClearSky Allied Health, we believe that true wellness is achieved through collaboration, compassion, and comprehensive care. As we continue to expand our care services, our commitment to a multidisciplinary approach remains at the heart of everything we do. One of the most impactful additions to our team is our dietetics service, a dedicated team of dietitians that play a vital role in supporting client diets across all stages of life and health journeys.
What is Dietetics?
Dietetics is the science of how food and nutrition affect human health. Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) are university-qualified professionals who use evidence-based dieting strategies to help individuals manage medical conditions, improve wellbeing, and make sustainable lifestyle changes. From managing diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders to supporting mental health and developmental conditions, dietitians are essential allies in holistic healthcare.
At ClearSky, our dietitians work closely with clients to understand their unique dieting needs, preferences, and goals. Whether it’s helping a child with sensory aversions to food, guiding an adult through weight management, or supporting an older adult with malnutrition, our dietitians provide tailored advice that empowers people to thrive.
Holistic dietetic care is not just about nutrients, as the practice of dietetics recognises that food is also about enjoyment, connection, and culture. Our dietitians support clients to nourish both body and mind, helping them find pleasure and confidence in eating while still meeting their health needs. Our dietitians also focus on capacity building, equipping clients with practical skills such as grocery shopping, meal planning, budgeting, and cooking so that healthy eating habits become sustainable in everyday life.
Dietitian vs Nutritionist
You might find yourself wondering about the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist. Put simply, all dietitians are nutrition professionals, but not all nutritionists are dietitians. Becoming a dietitian requires an accredited university degree in dietetics and supervised practice, allowing them to provide medical nutrition therapy for a range of health conditions.
Nutritionists will focus on many of the same aspects of diet as a dietitian; however, nutritionists are not qualified to provide medical advice. The key difference between dietitians and nutritionists is that a dietitian will use their knowledge of food to develop dietary guidelines for a client to treat health conditions such as food allergies, diabetes, obesity, or cardiovascular diseases. Conversely, a nutritionist will work more as a diet consultant in public health rather than in medical centres and hospitals. The role of a nutritionist often involves promoting healthy eating patterns and supporting food safety standards.
Dietetics in a Multidisciplinary Setting
What sets ClearSky apart is our integrated model of care across all of our care services. Our dietitians don’t work in isolation, they collaborate with occupational therapists, speech pathologists, behaviour practitioners, and other allied health professionals to deliver coordinated, client-centred support.
Our dietitians multidisciplinary approach ensures that every aspect of a client’s health is considered. For example:
- Children with developmental delays may benefit from joint sessions with a dietitian and speech pathologist to address feeding difficulties and communication challenges.
- Clients with autism or ADHD often work with both behaviour support practitioners and dietitians to develop routines around mealtimes, manage sensory sensitivities, and promote balanced nutrition.
- Adults recovering from injury or illness may receive support from occupational therapists and dietitians to regain independence in meal preparation and manage dietary needs related to their condition.
By sharing insights and strategies across various allied health disciplines, The team at ClearSky creates a seamless experience for clients and maximises the quality of care services provided and improve health outcomes.
Dietetics and Behaviour Support: A Powerful Partnership
One of the most exciting developments at ClearSky is the synergy between our dietitians and behaviour support practitioners. Dietetics and behaviour are deeply interconnected, and when addressed together, they can lead to transformative outcomes.
For instance, a young person with restrictive eating patterns may benefit from a behaviour support plan that includes strategies for expanding food choices, while the dietitian supports this by improving food variety to ensure nutritional adequacy. Similarly, adults with intellectual disabilities may receive guidance to develop healthy eating routines, broaden the range of foods they enjoy, manage emotional eating, or navigate food-related social situations.
Dietitians can also play a key role in supporting mood and mental health by working with clients to improve intake of essential vitamins and minerals, encourage regular eating patterns, and reduce binge eating tendencies. These targeted dieting strategies not only strengthen physical health but also foster emotional regulation and overall wellbeing.
This partnership between dietetics and behavioural support is particularly valuable in disability support settings, where clients often face complex challenges that require coordinated and compassionate care.
Empowering Clients Through Diet Education
Education is at the heart of our dietitians dietetics service. Our dietitians provide more than a simple meal plan and diet for you to follow, they equip clients with the knowledge and skills to make confident, sustainable choices around food. This includes:
- Practical meal planning and budgeting strategies
- Label reading and grocery shopping skills
- Hands-on cooking demonstrations and food preparation tips
- Nutrition support that respects cultural and family traditions
Our dietitians also work closely with carers, support workers, and families to ensure that everyone involved in a client’s dietary care understands their nutritional needs and goals.
